Ḥafṣah, the wife of the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him said, "I did not see the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, offer his voluntary prayer while sitting until a year before his death, peace and blessings of God be upon him, when indeed he used to offer his voluntary prayer while sitting, and he used to recite the chapter and to adorn its recitation, to the extent that it took longer [to recite] than longer chapters (had they been read without recitation)." The Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, used to pray in a sitting position and recite while sitting. When the remaining number [of verses] in his recitation was thirty to forty verses, he would stand, and recite while standing, then bow down, then prostrate. He would then do the same in the second unit of prayer. Click on ḥadīth to read more
